In the paper, pulp, sugar, and packaging industries, brightness is a critical quality parameter that must be continuously monitored. Manual lab measurements are too slow for inline production control. EMX Industries' BriteX-100 solves this with real-time, automated brightness measurement directly on the production line.
The sensor measures relative brightness based on diffuse 457nm blue light, in accordance with the international ISO 2470 standard — the same methodology used in laboratory testing. This means BriteX-100 readings are directly traceable to recognized brightness standards. Results appear on a 99-level display (00-99), letting operators see at a glance whether a product meets the required specification.
The BriteX-100 is optimized for small target areas — with a spot size of just 8mm at a measurement distance of up to 150mm — making it particularly suited to labels, reflective surfaces, plastic products, carpet, and registration marks. Sensitivity, gain, and projected light intensity (low/medium/high) are adjustable, with a spectral response from 350 to 1000nm for flexible use across diverse materials.
Alongside the discrete PNP/NPN output for direct control of machine logic, the BriteX-100 also offers an analog output, enabling continuous monitoring and data logging — valuable for process control and quality reporting on European production lines that must meet strict quality standards.
The BriteX-100 features adjustable gain and three levels of projected light intensity (low/medium/high), allowing the sensor to be finely tuned to widely varying material types and surface reflectances. The broad spectral response (350–1000nm) ensures consistent readings even on materials with unusual reflective properties. Thanks to its rugged, industrial metal housing, the sensor withstands the dusty, often humid environment of paper and pulp processing lines, where continuous operation without maintenance stops is essential.
Applications include inline quality control in paper and board manufacturing, pulp and textile processing, sugar refining, and packaging lines where consistent brightness and reflectance are decisive for product quality.
