Drive-Thru Vehicle Detector USVD-4X — Ultrasonic Detection without a Loop

The USVD-4X is an above-ground vehicle detector from EMX based on ultrasonic Triangular Planar Array technology — no induction loop or saw-cutting needed. Detection range 0.3–1.5m, response time ~2.0s, NEMA 4X housing. Ideal for drive-thrus and car washes.

  • No saw-cutting or underground wiring required
  • Fast to install and easy to reposition
  • Reliable detection via 4-transducer TPA array
  • NEMA 4X — withstands weather, dust, and cleaning agents

Drive-thru vehicle detector USVD-4X

At drive-thrus, car washes, and fast-food locations, an induction loop in the pavement is often impractical — limited surface area, frequent repaving, or the desire to install without roadwork makes an above-ground solution more attractive. EMX Industries' USVD-4X delivers exactly that: ultrasonic vehicle detection without a loop, mounted on a pole or wall.

The sensor uses a Triangular Planar Array (TPA) with four ultrasonic transducers to detect vehicles within a range of 0.3 to 1.5 meters, with a response time of approximately 2.0 seconds. This configuration provides a stable, reliable detection pattern even across variation in vehicle height and shape — relevant at drive-thrus where both cars and vans pass through.

Since no saw-cutting or underground wiring is required, installation time is significantly shorter than with traditional loop systems, and the sensor can easily be repositioned if the lane layout changes. The rugged NEMA 4X housing protects the electronics against weather, dust, and cleaning agents — relevant at car washes and food-service locations that are cleaned regularly.

The USVD-4X provides two independent SPDT relay outputs, allowing entry and exit detection to be controlled separately — practical for drive-thrus with distinct in and out lanes. The output delay is adjustable to 1, 2, or 4 seconds, helping to prevent unintended repeat activations when a vehicle briefly stops within the detection range. With an operating temperature of -40°C to +85°C, the sensor also handles extreme climate conditions, from freezing cold to heat, making it suitable for use across Europe, from Scandinavia to Southern Europe.

Typical applications include drive-thru fast-food restaurants, car washes, drive-in ATMs, and other locations where fast-to-install, above-ground vehicle detection is preferred over a buried loop. Pole or wall mounting also makes it easy to adjust for seasonal changes in lane layout without additional groundwork.
