For most standard gate and door applications, a range of 30 feet (9 metres) is more than enough: the majority of residential and light commercial passages fall well within that range. In those cases, there's no reason to pay for the extended range of the NIR-50, when the base version offers exactly the same reliability over a shorter distance. The NIR is the entry-level variant within the retroreflective photoeye series: the same wide voltage compatibility and simple, non-monitored operation, in a more compact application range.
Despite the shorter range, the NIR offers the same wide voltage range of 12 to 240V, AC and DC, as the NIR-50. That means the choice between NIR and NIR-50 is purely a matter of the required distance, not power supply compatibility.
Like the rest of the retroreflective series, the NIR uses a reflector on the opposite side of the roadway, so cabling is only needed on one side. For applications where power is only available on one side of the gate or door, that's a direct, practical solution.
The NIR shares the same compact dimensions as the NIR-50, with two LED indicators for quick alignment and adjustable sensitivity. The kit ships complete with mounting bracket, protective hoods, and connection cable.
Like the NIR-50, the NIR isn't UL325 compliant and is therefore intended for non-monitored applications, particularly relevant at gate and door controllers from before 2016 that don't require monitored external protection. For projects that do need UL325-compliant monitoring, one of the monitored photoeyes in the range is the right choice.
For standard garage doors, residential gates, and most light commercial applications within 9 metres, the NIR is a direct, cost-effective choice. At wider passages, or in environments with heavy rain or snow where the NIR-50's extended range provides a performance buffer, the NIR-50 is the better choice.
The NIR is mainly used at standard garage doors, residential and light commercial gates, and parking barriers with older, non-monitored controllers within the standard range.
