Manually monitoring smoke, dust, and airborne particulates in ventilation systems is time-consuming and imprecise. EMX Industries' PMX automates this process with a sensor that measures changes in light transmission to detect smoke and airborne particulates — ideal for demand-controlled ventilation.
The PMX offers 99 levels of relative light transmission for precise monitoring of smoke and particulate concentration, with a detection speed of just 100 microseconds. A PNP/NPN discrete output and a 0-5V analog output allow external systems — such as exhaust fans — to be automatically controlled based on measured values, without manual intervention.
With a range of up to 9 meters (30ft), the PMX can be deployed across a wide range of spaces. The sensor is available in two configurations: a board-only version for OEM integration, and a version with a NEMA 4X enclosure that protects the components while a high-quality window still allows precise light measurement.
The PMX stores threshold settings and calibration data in EEPROM non-volatile memory, so the sensor resumes correct operation immediately after a power interruption. With a switching frequency of 6kHz and a response time of under 150 microseconds, the sensor reacts in near real-time to changes in smoke or dust concentration. IP65 protection (not suitable for pressure washdown) shields the electronics from dust and splashing water, while the operating temperature range of -20°C to +55°C makes the PMX suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations across Europe.
Typical applications include commercial kitchen ventilation (exhaust hoods), greenhouses where ventilation of fumes and pesticides must be controlled, and industrial smokestacks or ducts where smoke density needs to be monitored. By activating ventilation only when needed, the PMX reduces energy costs and helps ensure compliance with safety regulations.
