Vehicle Detection Sensor CS303 — Magnetoresistive Sensor without Saw-Cutting

The CS303 is a magnetoresistive vehicle detection sensor from EMX — an alternative to induction loops that doesn't require full saw-cutting. Available as CS303-DB (direct burial) or CS303-FP (flat pack, single saw-cut). Detection range up to 1.5m, IP69K waterproof.

  • No full loop or extensive saw-cutting required
  • Fast response time (~125ms)
  • IP69K — withstands water and mechanical loads
  • Choice of direct burial (CS303-DB) or flat pack (CS303-FP)

CS303 magnetoresistive vehicle detection sensor

Where traditional induction loops require saw-cutting into the pavement, EMX Industries' CS303 offers an alternative based on 3-axis (X/Y/Z) magnetoresistive technology. The sensor measures disturbances in the earth's magnetic field caused by a vehicle's presence, without requiring a full loop to be cut.

The CS303 platform consists of a central CS303-C-1 controller that can be paired with two sensor versions: the CS303-DB (direct burial) for permanent, underground installation in asphalt or concrete, and the CS303-FP (flat pack) for a more compact, shallower installation requiring only a single saw-cut. Both variants share the same control electronics and are functionally equivalent — the difference lies in the installation method.

The sensor offers a detection range of up to 1.5 meters and a response time of approximately 125ms, with an IP69K rating that withstands water, debris, and mechanical loads beneath the road surface. This makes the CS303 suitable for situations where a full loop installation isn't practical, such as existing paved surfaces or locations where minimal roadwork is preferred.

A key advantage of the CS303 platform is its compatibility with standard loop detector inputs: the relay output emulates the behavior of a traditional loop detector, so existing gate and barrier controllers can be connected without modification. This makes switching from a faulty or outdated loop to the CS303 particularly straightforward. The sensor is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations and requires significantly less installation time than a traditional loop system, with the added benefit of low maintenance requirements over the life of the installation.

Typical applications include barriers, gate automation, and parking systems at business parks and parking garages where fast, less invasive installation is preferred over traditional loops.
