The sensor detects vehicles by measuring changes in the earth's magnetic field, without needing an induction loop to be cut.
The VMD202 detects vehicles at a distance of up to approximately 3.6 meters (12ft) at a minimum speed of 5 mph, with 10 adjustable sensitivity levels for tuning to the specific installation. Low power consumption also makes the sensor suitable for solar-powered installations, relevant for locations without easy access to mains power.
A practical feature is the pre-terminated 15 or 30-meter direct burial cable, allowing the sensor to be placed some distance from the control cabinet without needing separate field wiring — speeding up installation and reducing the risk of wiring errors on-site.
The VMD202 operates on a wide power range of 12–39 VDC or 12–27 VAC, making it suitable for virtually any existing installation without additional power adaptations. The extremely low standby current of just 70 microamps contributes to its suitability for solar-powered applications. Upon detection, the Form C relay switches for approximately 5 seconds — more than sufficient for reliable gate or barrier activation. The rugged operating temperature range of -30°C to +70°C makes the sensor suitable for use across virtually any European climate.
Typical applications include free-exit detection at barriers and gates, where vehicles leaving a site from the inside are automatically detected without a loop or additional operator input. For business parks with multiple exits, this approach offers a cost-effective alternative to installing separate exit loops at every location.
